CORK-DUN LAOGHAIRE FEEDER RACE RESULTS - May 17 2010

On Friday last a 20.00 hour evening start from Cork Harbour saw the commencement of the feeder race to Dun Laoghaire for the Liebherr ICRA Nationals.  This race was mandatory for yachts wishing to compete in the Commodore’s Cup to be held in the Solent in August and also served as a qualifier for any yacht wishing to compete in the Round Ireland Race from Wicklow in June.

This was the first opportunity the Irish team of Anthony O’Leary’s Antix, David Dwyer’s Marinerscove.ie and Andrew Creighton’s Roxy 6 have had to sail together as Roxy, the yacht to fill the Class Three slot, only arrived in Cork Harbour fresh from the Dale-Nelson Yard in Wales two weeks ago.

Conditions on Friday night as the yachts came to the start line were magnificent.  The harbour was resplendent bathed in brilliant sunlight with yachts from the Friday night Whitesail league flying everywhere in the 12-15knot NNW wind. The feeder race start saw the competitiors beat in the harbour to No.10 buoy where spinnakers were hoisted and they then ran back out the harbour creating a magnificent spectacle as they wove their way through the Whitesail Fleet.

Racing continued throughout the night and most of Saturday with the wind lightening and becoming fluky ranging from 8 to 16 knots providing excellent experience for the crews on the Commodore’s Cup yachts. In fact Marinerscove lost out when sailing into a windless area under Wicklow Head and retired at that point but speaking with Dwyer after racing he said that it was nonetheless a wonderful training opportunity with the constant almost hourly sail changes required.

Entries Reach 100 Mark - April 06 2010

The Liebherr Cruiser Nationals to be held in Dun Laoghaire from May from May 21st to 23rd and hosted by the Royal St. George Yacht Club, has already attracted very strong support. ICRA are delighted to report that already entries are almost at the 100 mark and expected to reach record numbers despite the current economic environment.

The formula for the event will be a three-day championship with seven races. There will be a variety of tight Windward/Leeward and Olympic type round the cans courses in two separate specially designated areas.

The combination of the National Championships title at stake and an excellent social programme ashore has proved to be a great success.  The fact that the event rotates locations has also added to its stature.  With the excellent racing and onshore entertainment planned by the Host Club, the Royal St. George, and in conjunction with the strong sponsors, Liebherr, The Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire and Dubarry Footwear and Clothing, a very special festival of sailing plus a strong welcome for all competitors is assured.

The inaugural ICRA Corinthian Cup for non-spinnaker boats is also being well supported with 17 entries already recorded. This event will be sailed on a separate course.

Early entry is encouraged so that final Class Bands can be fairly decided.

Discount Entry deadline approaches - March 24 2010

Provisional Race Schedule

30 high calibre entries have already been received for the Liebherr Cruiser Nationals to be held in Dun Laoghaire from May 21st to 23rd and this number is expected to grow over the next week as the discounted entry fee deadline of 31st March approaches. A fleet from all coasts of Ireland will assemble and is expected to include 12 boats from the West. The overall entry is expected to reach 100 Boats.

Feeder races from Cork and Wales are planned and with the Cork feeder nominated as a qualifier for this years Round Ireland
Race a strong entry is assured. This race will also be used by Irish Commodores’ Cup boats as a practice offshore. Already on the entry list with Commodores’ Cup interest are Anthony O’Leary’s ‘Antix’, the Creighton/Davies new build ‘Roxy 26’, featuring on her first offshore outing, and Tim Costello’s ‘Tiamat’.

Another well known name to feature in the entry list is Peter Rutter(GBR) in his QUOKKA 8. In QUOKKA 7 in 2008 the immensely talented Rutter battled the low visibility and tough competition to take his fifth title of the Rolex Commodores Cup.

The Host Club, Royal St George, is putting in a major effort to offer quality racing afloat and superb onshore entertainment as crews battle for the annual crown of being ICRA National Champions in their Class.

This year, in response to demand from the non spinnaker sector, an ICRA Corinthian Cup has been created to run alongside the Nationals on separate courses and is also expected to attract a good fleet.

Owners are encouraged to get in their entries early to help designate classes and overall planning for what promises to be a first class sailing event both.
