Focus Ireland Triathlon 2011 – Canoeists / Kayakers wanted

Focus Ireland are holding their annual Fundraising Triathlon at Dún Laoghaire Harbour, East Pier this year on Sunday, 31st July 2011 and are seeking canoe / kayak safety support on the day.
Participants will begin the event at 8am with a 350m or 750m swim in the Dún Laoghaire Harbour followed by a 20km cycle and finishing with a 5km run along Dún Laoghaire Harbour East Pier. The event is open to both individuals and teams; teams must consist of three participants, with each member competing in one discipline only. We expect 250/300 participants to take part with a further 200 spectators and 100 volunteers. The swim will take place in the sea – Dún Laoghaire East Pier off the RNLI slipway. A wave start will be used with competitors divided into groups of 100 based on expected finish times. A delay of 5 minutes will separate each group. This year we are offering two swim distances a 350m or a 750m and the cut off time for completion is 45 minutes.
In order that the swimming part of the day goes off safely we are looking for volunteers to help us on the day.
We are in need of the following:
1. 20/25 canoes, kayaks or boats to be on the water during the swim part of the event in
case of an emergency.
2. Volunteers to man the canoes / kayaks
We expect everyone to be in the water from 8.00am – arriving at the transition area for a safety brief at 7.30am. Roads close at 7.30am. Do you think you would be able to help us with some of our requirements specifically canoes / kayaks and people who might spare some time to help out on the day? The water element would be finished at approximately 9.15am and will be followed by a 20km cycle and a 5km run along the East Pier. At 12.30pm there will be an award ceremony for the participants.
All clubs, personnel and equipment will be covered under out Indemnity Insurance for the day.
