Updates on the Optimist European Championship from Event Chairman Frank O’Beirne
23 June 2014
Dear Club Member,
The Optimist European Championship will take place at the Royal St. George Yacht Club from the 12th to the 19th of July.
I am writing to outline the details of the event and extend an invitation to all club members to become involved in the day to day activities and welcome the large number of sailors, coaches and families to our Club.
The official arrival day for sailors and their boats is Saturday 12th of July but we are anticipating arrivals from as early as Wednesday 9th of July. Boat measurement and registration will begin on Wednesday. Over 250 sailors, their coaches and travelling family will arrive from 44 countries with 11 non European countries represented. The majority of the sailors and coaches will be accommodated in the Royal Marine Hotel.
A practice race will take place at 1pm on Sunday 13th of July and this will be followed by the opening ceremony at the Town Hall at 5pm. Invited Dignitaries, Ambassadors and Guests will participate in a parade to the club led by the Tallaght Youth Band.
Racing will commence in earnest on Monday and will continue through to Saturday. Prize giving and the closing ceremony will take place on Saturday evening.
Volunteers are still required for both on the water and shoreside activities (first aid and tweeting from the water to name but two)
Club members who would like to participate by volunteering for any activity should contact the event organising committee at firstname.lastname@example.org for further information.
The recent successes of events such as the ISAF Youth World Championship and the second leg of the Optimist Trials were largely due to the club members who gave so freely of their time. I hope we continue this great George tradition.
I look forward to seeing you during the event.
Chairman, Event Organising Committee
