Royal Ulster Yacht Club to Host Its 150 Year Anniversary in 2016

In 2016, the Royal Ulster Yacht Club will be 150 years old and are planning to celebrate their anniversary next summer with a great range of events both on and off the water.

RUYC Racing Events 2016

The celebrations are mainly centred around the annual regatta, which this year will take place over three days, and will provide racing for classic yachts and cruisers alongside a Quarter Ton championship – all in addition to the usual races for IRC classes, keelboats, and dinghies. Prior to racing on the Saturday, there will be a spectacular Parade of Sail of all boats attending including representatives from the Old Gaffers’ Association, the Glen, River and Fairy classes besides our own Waverleys and Bays and a number of famous classic boats with connections with racing in Belfast Lough.  We’re also hoping some Howth 17s may make the journey north. A full social programme ashore is also planned after each day’s sailing.

Many of these classic yachts were built by John Hilditch at Carrickfergus, or in Bangor at the Glen shipyard.  Carrick Sailing Club, which is also celebrating its 150 year history in 2016, is holding the Hilditch Regatta immediately prior to the celebrations at Bangor to enable these fabulous classic yachts to participate fully in both events.

Preceding the regatta, we will first hold the annual race around Ailsa Craig with a special trophy to mark the occasion and then, over the next weekend, we will see the UK National Sigma 33 Championship coming to RUYC. This is another event taking place over 3 days.  Following the regatta, we are planning an exciting day of match boat racing with world champion helmsmen.

The Anniversary Gala Dinner, the culmination of our celebrations, will be held after yachts from the Clyde competing in the North Channel Race arrive in Bangor and yachts from the ICC, ROC, OCC and CCC associations muster with RUYC before a joint cruise in company to the west of Scotland.

So, please keep these dates free and we will look forward to seeing you at RUYC next summer.

Yours sincerely,

Robin McKelvey
