What is Powerboating?

Powerboats, speedboats and RIBs offer a fast, exciting and versatile way of getting into boating. Because of their speed and because they can easily towed behind a car they are great for trips and exploring both at home and on holiday. Powerboats provide a popular, relatively affordable and exciting way of getting afloat. They are perfects for families wanting to get afloat and explore, picnic, ski or dive.

Why do an Irish Sailing Training Course?

An Irish Sailing training course provides the ideal way to get afloat for the first time, or to build on skills you already have. All courses are run to a syllabus used all over Ireland and will be led by a trained and qualified Irish Sailing Instructor. Each course is carefully designed to provide you with all of the skills and confidence you need to get you out on the water and to get the most out of your boating.

Irish Sailing National Powerboat Certificate Levels 1 & 2

Course objective:        to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to safely, and effectively, skipper an open powerboat, by day, on inland and coastal waters with which they are familiar.

Is wet weather gear provided or available?

Yes, the RSGYC provide full wet weather and safety gear. All you need to do is turn up with wellingtons/ suitable foot wear that can get wet.

Will I be able to safely use the Club Ribs upon successful completion of the Irish Sailing National Powerboat Course Levels 1 & 2?

Yes. Upon successful completion of your course you will be issued with the Irish Sailing National Powerboat Certificate 1 & 2 that will allow you to safely use the RSGYC Club powerboats.

Our Vice-Commodore, Paul Molloy, and I have many things in common. Apart from the obvious that we were both really bad at dodging requests for us to volunteer, we both have a desire to see the development of a Topper fleet in the Club. Let me explain why.
 
Most of our kids start sailing in Optimists which is a great little training boat but that is one of the problems, they’re little. Kids in general leave the Optimist class one of three ways. They Age-Out, they Fun-Out, or they Grow-Out. Increasingly our kids are getting bigger and bigger and all too many are growing too big for the Oppies at a young age.
 
That was the problem Lorraine and I faced with our son Daniel when he was 12 turning 13. He had gotten too big for the Oppie, and we were considering a Laser/ILCA 4 at the time. At that point we got some great advice from Robbie Walker who told us that Daniel was too young for the Laser, he had 2 boys in the class, so he knew.
 
So, we got Daniel a brand-new Topper from Viking Marine for about €4,500. It was the making of him. He did a full year on the Topper circuit and had an eye on the Topper Worlds which were due to be hosted in Cork in 2021 before we hosted the ILCA 4 Worlds later that summer.
 
In the end, though Covid intervened and the only training available to Daniel in the Club in 2020 was either to go back into the Oppie, not an option or go into the Laser early. Under the watchful eye, mentoring, and coaching from Toby Hudson Fowler, Daniel went on to win the Munster championships in 2022 and finish in the top 3 of every other ranking event.
 
The George is going to run Topper training this winter in parallel with Irish Sailings programme which means there will be an opportunity for the kids to sail with the winter academy. We have a couple of boats that might be available to borrow, and brand-new boats are still reasonably priced at €4,900 in Viking.
 
We are delighted that Toby Hudson Fowler has agreed to oversee this training, I cannot speak highly enough of him as a coach. If you have a child who sounds like they might fit the bill here’s the link.

The GOATs programme ( “George Optimist Advanced Training Squad” ) is the Club’s high-performance Optimist sailing programme. The programme runs over 2 terms through the winter from September to early April, and prepares the sailors for the Youth Nationals in late Spring and the next IODAI racing season.

Entry requirements

Our programme is based on fun, friendship, family and sporting excellence.

For new sailors wishing to participate, and in line with the programme’s policy, they must:

1. Have sailed in 2 IODAI Regional events and a National sailing event in Main Fleet (Junior or Senior) this season
2. Be able to sail comfortably in at least 18-20 knots of breeze
3. Have a strong standard of racing experience and be prepared for sessions of up to 4 hours on the water
4. Sailors moving from GODS to GOATS must have sign-off from GODS head coach, Finn Walker, before they are eligible to move into the GOATS programme

New sailors to the programme are also assessed by the programme’s head coach Rian Geraghty-McDonnell over 2 training sessions, prior to admission.

Format of programme

• Morning training each Sunday – please ensure your sailor has a good breakfast
• Double day (Sat & Sun) weekend of training once a month
• Aim is for 4 hours on water with briefing and debrief 0900-1430
• Each sailor will set goals for the season as part of the programme
• Individual sailor feedback from coaches (written and/or video) twice per term
• Fitness and sports psychology will be included as part of programme

Sailor requirements

• It is important that sailors have the correct warm sailing gear for the winter months (if you need advice about this please ask)
• Sailors must bring a notebook to every session
• Sailors must launch on time and in accordance with the timetable. Any sailor arriving late will not be facilitated as coaches will not be in a position to return to shore for latecomers

Coaches’ credentials

• Expert coaches who are all actively sailing themselves. Local, passionate and experienced
• International coaches – at least 2 weekends of training with top international coaches
• Recent and current Oppie National Champions will guest to share their learnings
• The biggest local Oppie fleet in Ireland providing real racing experience
• Racing practice at every session

Basic Racing Rules of Sailing and Lodging a Protest

Junior Room, RSGYC, Thursday April 6th at 7.30pm

The session will include a short presentation on rules, a rules quiz and it will cover filing a protest and what to expect at a protest hearing.  It will be interactive so please submit scenarios that you would like covered as well as incidents that you have experienced on the water.  Please submit these including a diagram of the boats leading up to the incident to annkirwan123@gmail.com by 17.00hrs on Thursday March 30th.  We will try to include all submissions in the session.

Rule books will be available to purchase on the night.

Notice of Race

Ireland’s largest regatta will take place from Thursday, July 6th to Sunday, July 9th 2023 and is planned to coincide with ‘Coastival’, a new week-long festival celebrating Dun Laoghaire’s Maritime heritage.

Big plans are afoot for 2023, and the committee is working closely with the four clubs along the waterfront, the wonderful team in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, and our fantastic sponsors to make this the biggest and best VDLR yet!
