SUMMARY:Supper and Talk with Des Ekin
DESCRIPTION:Des Ekin\, author of bestselling book The Stolen Village\, will talk about one of the most dramatic stories in Irish history – the pirate slave raid known as “The Sack of Baltimore”. \nIn June 1631\, a joint force of pirates from Algiers and armed troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire stormed ashore at the sleepy little harbour village of Baltimore\, Co. Cork\, and abducted nearly all the villagers. More than 100 people – mainly women and children – were borne away to a life of slavery in North Africa. Only two of them ever saw Ireland again. \n\nThe Stolen Village is a fascinating tale of international piracy and culture clash nearly 400 years ago and is the first book to cover this relatively unknown and under-researched incident in Irish history\, shortlisted for the Argosy Irish Nonfiction Book of the Year Award. \nThis event will begin at 7pm\, consisting of a talk followed by a two course supper for €25. \nBook your place today by calling the Club at 01 280 1811 or emailing Eleanor housemanager@rsgyc.ie
