2021 Summer schedule.
Team George Sea Squirts and Tigers – update
Due to all the restrictions, mostly around social distancing, imposed on us last year, we were unable to get our younger, less experienced sailors afloat. We got our Sea Squirts and Tigers (usually 7-9 yo), back out, enjoying the water and learning the basics, very briefly in Autumn 2020, before, yet another, lockdown hit us. This window of opportunity came about due to the new smaller rigs, sourced by our Sailing Manager, Ronan Adams, which allow our younger sailors to sail alone and cope extremely safely with conditions. The sailors who used these rigs were in the older age group of Tigers and so had a few years of sailing experience. Our plan is for the youngest sailors to be in their boats, getting a feel for the water and how a boat feels and honing their action and reaction skills.
For our youngest sailors, Sea Squirts, there is no need to have their own boat – the use of a club boat is included in the price of the course. When they reach 9, Sea Tigers, and have a suitable level of proficiency they can then begin to learn to transition to the various Irish Sailing modules and start completing their sailing passport. At this stage a boat is a requirement and reliance on hiring a club boat should not be a given, preference for rental of club boats will be given to Sea Squirts. A boat, whether your own, rented, a club boat or a cousin’s in a necessity – swapping in and out of boats is, sadly, a thing of the past!
Please find links to all our Junior Summer courses on the website, under Junior Sailing. Courses are booking fast – which is great to see and we appreciate your continued support in the most awful of times.
Our youngest groups, starting from 6 years old. No experience is required to join this group. This group sail in the Club Mirrors with our instructors. The aim of this group is to build confidence in and around the water.
Are our more experienced group and go up to 10 years old. These sailors will use their own Optimists or a rented club Optimist. Often sailors will share a boat with another Sea Tiger. The aim of this group is to learn the basics of sailing in an informal way.
* Please note if your child/children completed the Tigers course last year, they can be booked onto our Junior Summer Sailing courses under the ‘Start Sailing’ module (level).
Sailors that have completed or tried Sea Squirts & Tigers last year as guests of the RSGYC must become Club members to partake in any courses this year. RSGYC courses are available to Club members only. Guests of Club members are encouraged to try a course, or some sessions to see if their sailors like sailing and the club. When they do, membership of the RSGYC is required in order to take any more courses.
