The Club had the pleasure of welcoming the Royal Dutch Navy into Dublin harbour on the 30th of June 2015. The navy training vessel 'Urania' was passaging through Dublin to refuel and depart for Belfast for the Tall Ships race which took place between the 2nd and 5th of July. The ship's Commanding Officer - Lieutenant Commander Harry Dekkers along with his crew offered our junior sailors and instructors a tour of the naval training vessel. Commodore Justin McKenna and Rear Commodore Sailing Frank O'Beirne accompanied by some of our club instructors presented the Club Burgee to the Dutch training vessels Commanding Officer as a sign of thanks and continued friendship.
The Royal St. George Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire, the 2013 recipient of the Mitsubishi ISA Club of the Year, hosted its principal annual event, the George’s Day Dinner on Saturday, 27th April 2013. This year the celebration was all the more special for it marking the 175th year since the Club was founded. To the delight of guests and Members, Honorary Member, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Executive Chairman and Founder Director of Clipper Ventures Plc was the guest speaker on the night. Sir Robin kept everyone utterly enthralled with his stories of adventure on the high seas. As part of the evenings proceeding at the George’s Day Dinner, Commodore Liam O’Rourke awarded the Jameson Trophy, the Club’s premier trophy which is presented for outstanding contribution; this year’s recipient was Ken Williams who started working for the Club as a contractor overseeing the Forecourt development in the late eighties and has been an integral part of the Club’s fabric for nearly twenty five years, he is much loved by both Members and staff. To the best of their knowledge, it is the first time in its history that the trophy has been awarded to a non-Club Member.
The Club's Annual St. George's Day Dinner took place on Saturday, 23rd April: a wonderful occasion when trophies are awarded and Members, guests, and our Flag Officers, join together to celebrate all that is great about the Royal St. George Yacht Club. To celebrate the end of each Summer sailing course the junior sailors turn into master bakers and bring in their best creations. This week we added an extra twist whereby they could choose to bake a sailing themed cake or a football themed cake. As usual, the standard this week was really high, chocolate seems to be the most popular choice. Below are some photographs taken of the cakes for the day.
