2026 ILCA World Championships

Planning is well underway for the 2026 ILCA 7 Men’s and ILCA 6 Women’s World Championships, which will be proudly co-hosted by the Royal St George Yacht Club and the National Yacht Club. This is a truly prestigious achievement and a moment of great pride for our Club.

The ILCA classes are the Olympic single-handed dinghy events for men and women, and these championships will be the first Olympic sailing class World Championships held in Ireland since 2001. Secured in the face of strong international competition, the awarding of these World Championships recognises the proven capability, experience and reputation of both Clubs following more than two decades of successfully hosting major world and European events.

Olympic class World Championships are rarely hosted in Europe — typically only once every four years — making this a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Ireland and for Dun Laoghaire. With elite sailors from around the world competing for selection towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, the standard of racing and international attention will be exceptional.

Dun Laoghaire will become a hub of activity from April onwards, as teams arrive to train and prepare, with 160 new ILCA boats being shipped in specifically for the event. The scale and profile of this championship will place our harbour and our Clubs firmly on the global sailing stage.

As preparations continue, club members are warmly encouraged to get involved. Volunteers will play a vital role in delivering this world-class event, and it promises to be a rewarding and memorable experience for all who participate. Sponsorship opportunities are also available, offering members and businesses the chance to support and be associated with a landmark moment in Irish sailing.

Further details on volunteering roles and sponsorship options will be shared in the coming weeks — we look forward to welcoming your involvement in what will be a historic event for our Club.
