12ft National Championships
11/05 @ 8:00 am.5:00 pm
The 12ft International Dinghy Championships at the Royal St George Yacht Club (RSGYC) in Dún Laoghaire are a notable event in the sailing calendar. The championships feature boats with two different rigs: the original balanced lug (International rig) and the revised Gunter rig with mainsail and a small jib (Dublin Bay Sailing Club rig). Both rigs compete on equal footing, with the Gunter rig excelling upwind and the balanced lug performing better downwind
In the most recent championship held on 2024, the event consisted of six races in Dun Laoghaire Harbour with winds ranging from 6 to 12 knots
The competition was fierce, with boats like ‘Sgadan’, ‘Cora’, and ‘Pixie’ showcasing impressive performances. ‘Cora’ emerged as a standout, winning multiple races despite being over 100 years old
The event also included a sociable lunch break, fostering camaraderie among the sailors. At the prize-giving ceremony, various trophies were awarded, including the Altair Trophy and the historic 1932 Edmond Johnston Trophy
