A Snippet From the Club Archives

A message from Club Archivist Mark Ridgway

From the Club Archives:

Our yacht club was founded in 1838 as the Kingstown Boat Club. It remained so until May 1845. In the extract available to download on the right from our club archives we can see that committee member Lord Conyingham, on instruction from the general committee, wrote to Buckingham Palace requesting Royal Patronage from Her Majesty Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. On the 3rd of May 1845, Buckingham Palace responded positively to this request. They also invited the Kingstown Boat Club to rename the club to the Royal Kingstown Boat Club and allowed it to fly the Royal Ensign given that Her Majesty was now the Royal Patron of the Club.

The Royal St. George Yacht Club is proud to have a rich collection of documentation in the form of meeting minutes, art work, photography and trophies mapping the Club’s history. As Club archivist, I intend on an ad hoc basis to send out interesting pieces of the club history to members. Hopefully, this can at some stage be encapsulated into an updated history of the Royal St. George Yacht Club book.
